Uganda’s Growth and Gaps: A Rural Perspective

Uganda has made significant progress in economic growth, with a 5.3% annual GDP increase from 2017 to 2021 (World Bank, 2023), but rural areas continue to face major challenges.

In rural Uganda, 40% of girls in the Rwenzori sub-region do not complete primary education, and 31% of girls are affected by early marriage, leading to higher dropout rates (UDHS, 2021). This impedes progress toward SDG 4: Quality Education.

Over 50% of women experience physical violence in intimate relationships (UDHS, 2021), and 60% of rural women face restrictions on land rights (World Bank, 2023). These challenges hinder efforts toward SDG 5: Gender Equality and SDG 10: Reduced Inequality.

In Kabarole district, the HIV/AIDS prevalence rate is 7.5%, above the national average (UDHS, 2021). Maternal mortality remains high at 368 deaths per 100,000 live births (UDHS, 2021), while unsafe abortions affect 13% of rural women (UDHS, 2021). Limited access to reproductive health services worsens these issues, preventing progress on SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being and SDG 5.

Inadequate accountability structures and limited civic participation undermine effective service delivery in rural areas, hindering the achievement of SDG 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions and exacerbating poverty and inequality.
